borneo boohicky

walked into my room this afternoon and saw a half naked old white man who smelled like he hasn’t showered in weeks. this displeased all my senses.

enough was enough. so, i went down to the front desk and booked  into a single room all for moi. it is afterall, xmas eve. and i am afterall, a career woman who is starting to feel too old to be doing the hostel sharing a dorm room thing.

anyway, its the first xmas eve to be spent by myself. and i mean by myself. i’m currently parked in front of the computer, using the hostel’s free internet cuz there is nothing better to do.

tomorrow xmas day, means maybe going to an island and hanging out with a dweeby english guy whom i met in sukau. oh holiday joy!

don’t get me wrong. borneo has been fun. not rock my world fun. but nature channel fun.

in sukau==> i saw animals galore. orangautans, check. probiscus monkey, check. hornbill, check. monitor lizard, and on and on and on….check.check.check.

in sipadan ==> one of the world’s top diving sites and not without acclaim. giant sea turtles, school of big-eyed trevellis. no sea urchin in my foot this time. but plenty of sea lice bites.i look like i have measles all over where my wet suit didn’t cover my skin. i am grossed out by myself. maybe that’s why i’m without any fun companions on xmas eve haha. but hey, i’m cool. i went diving. i’m a special person just like padi says.

i’m hoping when i go home, my trip in borneo will seem more exciting and memorable then it currently feels. i think i’ve hit a point where i’m thinking, you know having some gfs or a boytoy by my side to share, “hey kota kinabalu is boring”……..would be a good thing.

in any case, emily and two other girls will be meeting me for four nights and five days of debauchery and golden tans in bali.

so i can’t complain. life is warm. 2006 was good to me.

happy holidays, everyone. may peace be with you.

the terminal

i arrive at midnight and have a seven am flight straight to borneo. after doing some logistics with time and costs, it just doesn’t make sense for me do sleep anywhere else– the benches located in the arrivals terminal beat out the five star airport hotel.

have no fear. i’ve done it before. arriving by 10pm at stanstead airport to claim a coveted spot. first one in boots, buying a prepackaged sandwich at the butt crack of dawn to refuel my tired ass for the flight to sardinia. done it in edinburgh when i missed a flight back to london. chips, chocolates, a nick hornby novel in hand. roughing it makes for fun stories and you meet interesting characters. like the hungarian guy packing up his bags for his first flight ever. leaving on a jet plane to dublin, where he would carve out a new beginning. he didn’t even know where he would spend his first night. so i walked him over to waterstone’s to scribble down some hostels listed in the lonely planet.

later serenaded by the songs strummed on his guitar, i was reminded of the beauty of improvisation in the play we call life.

this time though, things will be a bit different. sans amigas, i will lack someone to watch my bag while i brush my teeth in the bathroom. someone to recount the adventure about to be had, or the adventure that just was. but hey at least KL is ranked number six by the “budget traveller’s guide to sleeping in airports. it got mostly these

Excellent, considering it’s an airport - sleeping, comfort, and or safety are possible
and a few of these Tolerable - not terrible, but not that great either

yeah unbeknownst to me until today, there is a whole site dedicated to describing and reviewing the experience of slumbering in the airports of the world. thus if you find yourself jealous of all the fun i have spending the wee hours in the airport check out http://www.sleepinginairports.net/ before your next adventure =P.

if you have a penchant for kim chee, seoul’s international hub is ranked number one.

p.s. orangutans you best better be spotted by the cheap china binoculars i’m buying tomorrow.
